Britons consuming salt equivalent to 22 bags as hidden foods are blamed
A recent study has revealed that the average Briton consumes 8.4g of salt daily, which is 40% more than the recommended amount by the NHS. This equates to eating 22 bags of crisps, according to the British Heart Foundation. The health service advises keeping salt intake to no more than 6g per day, but many are exceeding this limit without even realizing it. Salt is often hidden in everyday foods like bread, breakfast cereals, and ready meals, making it easy to consume too much.
Lucy Kershaw, a nutrition expert, warns that salt lurks in unexpected places. She explains that bread, cheese, jarred sauces, and tinned soups are major contributors to salt intake. Even cottage cheese, a popular protein source, can be loaded with sodium, which is added to enhance flavor and preserve it. Excessive salt consumption poses serious health risks, including high blood pressure, a major risk factor for heart disease.
Kershaw suggests simple ways to reduce salt intake without sacrificing flavor. She recommends swapping crisps and salted nuts for plain rice cakes, chopped fruit, or veggie sticks. Making soups and sauces from scratch and using herbs and spices instead of salt can also help. Checking food labels and using traffic light systems can make it easier to spot high-salt products and make healthier choices.
The study highlights the importance of being mindful of salt consumption to maintain a healthy lifestyle.
