"We fell short in that semifinal, but we learned from it," Nel said. "It's about being more clinical in those tight situations. We had opportunities to score, but one reckless decision or a soft moment could pin us back in our own 22."
The Stormers' last taste of success came in the 2021/22 season when they won the URC title and the South African Shield. Nel highlights the team's consistent performance at the top of the URC table, a testament to their strength and depth.
"I've never seen a Stormers team stay at the top of the log for the entire regular season," Nel noted. "But we learned from our mistakes, and now we're ready to take the next step."
The Stormers' upcoming fixtures include two challenging away games against Connacht and Edinburgh, followed by a coastal derby against the Sharks. Nel acknowledges the pressure to improve but remains focused on the team's excitement for the season ahead.
"We set high expectations for ourselves," he said. "We want to replicate last season's start and finish with a final and the URC trophy. It's more about the excitement than the pressure."
The team's performance against the All Blacks in the Greatest Rivalry Series provided a glimpse of their potential. Despite the defeat, they showcased their physicality, set-piece dominance, and ability to pressure the opposition.
Nel reflects on the game, acknowledging the challenges of facing a well-prepared All Black side. "We gave it our all," he said. "But they were also finding their rhythm. Our move and scrum functioned well, and we're known for our strong defensive system and set-pieces."
