The inaugural Taylor Wessing Irish Photo Prize has unveiled its winners, showcasing a diverse range of photographic talent and themes. The top prize of €10,000 was awarded to Conor Horgan for his thought-provoking series, EDGE, which captures the stark barriers along Dublin's Grand Canal, symbolizing the complex issue of homelessness and asylum-seeking. This series, focusing on the structures rather than individuals, highlights the emotional and social impact of these barriers.
Horgan's work is a powerful commentary on the human condition and the challenges faced by vulnerable populations. It invites viewers to reflect on the role of societal structures in shaping our lives and the potential consequences of such interventions. The prize, presented in partnership with Taylor Wessing and Photo Museum Ireland, attracted over 1,300 entries, demonstrating the high caliber of talent in the Irish photography scene.
In addition to the top prize, two Judges’ Selection Awards were presented to Laura Dunwoody and Salem Anowe Chukwuezi. Dunwoody's series, Nothing Lasts Forever, offers a poignant exploration of youth and community in Ballymun, capturing the fleeting nature of life and the resilience of the human spirit. Chukwuezi's Covert project delves into the everyday experiences of Black men in Ireland, shedding light on the complexities of identity and the challenges faced by marginalized communities.
The Taylor Wessing Irish Photo Bursary of €10,000 was awarded to emerging artist Patryk Gizicki, whose work explores youth culture, identity, and masculinity through the lens of his Polish heritage and Irish upbringing. This bursary supports the development of new artistic voices and encourages experimentation within the field of photography.
The prize represents the largest combined prize fund for contemporary photography in Ireland, underscoring the importance of recognizing and promoting artistic excellence. The winning works will form part of the Taylor Wessing Irish Photo Prize Collection, ensuring their preservation and accessibility for future generations.
The exhibition featuring the shortlisted artists' works is open to the public at Photo Museum Ireland until May 24, 2026. This exhibition not only showcases the winning entries but also provides a platform for the public to engage with and appreciate the diverse range of photographic styles and themes presented. The accompanying program of talks, tours, and public events further enriches the experience, fostering a deeper understanding and appreciation of the art form.
The Taylor Wessing Irish Photo Prize is a significant initiative that not only celebrates the talent of Irish photographers but also contributes to the broader cultural discourse. It encourages artists to explore themes of community, identity, and social issues, fostering a deeper understanding of the human experience. As the prize continues to evolve, it will undoubtedly play a pivotal role in shaping the future of contemporary photography in Ireland and beyond.
